Philadelphia’s Historic Laurel Hill Cemetery is welcoming visitors, as part of DesignPhiladelphia, to view a small-scale version of their future lighting master plan developed by The Lighting Practice.

The new lighting plan aligns with the sustainability objectives while celebrating the past and present of the grounds and surrounding community. Visitors are invited to the kick-off party and a special twilight tour of the grounds on October 4th at 7PM. A vignette of the lighting master plan will be visible to the public along Kelly Drive from October 4th through October 13th from 6PM to 9PM. During the kick-off party, select trees will be illuminated within the cemetery, creating a dynamic light show.  The color-changing LED fixtures will be provided by Illuminations, Inc. and Acclaim Lighting.

The Lighting Practice was selected by Laurel Hill to design and implement a lighting master plan for the historic Laurel Hill Cemetery. Developed by TLP’s Al Borden(retired founder of TLP), Caitlin Bucari, Alina Wolf, and Angela Banner, the LED lighting system will illuminate the cemetery and bring attention to passersby of the property while respecting the integrity of the historic grounds. Laurel Hill is the final resting place for over 75,000 people, which includes many prominent figures in our nation’s history.

Laurel Hill’s new nighttime identity will thoughtfully illuminate architectural and landscape features to enhance the landmark’s visibility along Kelly Drive and the surrounding neighborhood. It will bring attention to the cemetery’s prominent structures while engaging the surrounding community.

The lighting designers chose to use low energy LED sources with precise options to eliminate glare and accurately light the intended structures. Fixtures can be turned off through a central programmable controller to preserve normal day/night cycles for wildlife. The lighting was strategically designed to eliminate disturbances to the natural habitat whilst adding to the visitor experience.

Celebrate with Laurel Hill Cemetery, DesignPhiladelphia, and The Lighting Practice and view the newly lit landscape October 4th by purchasing tickets to the kickoff reception here.
