Designed to support mothers, babies, families, and caregivers, the Nemours Children’s Health Advanced Delivery Unit reimagines the hospital experience through a hospitality-inspired approach rooted in comfort, nature, and wellness. The Lighting Practice developed a lighting design that reinforces the project’s biophilic vision, creating a calming, restorative environment with the warmth and tranquility of a spa while supporting the functional needs of patient care.
Indirect cove lighting defines the unit, extending the feeling of daylight into interior spaces while minimizing visible light sources. Thoughtfully detailed coves guide circulation, reinforce wayfinding, and create a soft, welcoming atmosphere. Warm wood finishes, natural textures, and organic forms are enhanced with carefully placed accent lighting, creating an environment that feels more like a hospitality destination than a traditional hospital.
Patient spaces, including labor, delivery, postpartum, and family waiting areas, balance clinical performance with comfort. Layered lighting, illuminated mirrors, integrated shelf lighting, and color-changing artwork provide positive distractions, while intuitive controls allow patients to adjust light levels to suit their comfort.
By seamlessly integrating lighting into the architecture and emphasizing indirect illumination, the completed design delivers a soothing, spa-like environment that reduces stress, supports healing, and enhances the experience for patients, families, and caregivers alike.
