The Domain

Austin, TX

The Domain is a former 57-acre corporate site in Northwest Austin and home to a grove of enormous live oak trees, this mixed-use development features over 1,000,000 SF of retail space and 75,000 SF of office space and residential. Trees remain an integral part of the site, giving it the appearance of a mature neighborhood. In designing lighting for the streets, building façades, paseos, public art and landscaping, The Lighting Practice treated the trees and architecture as sculptures. Low-wattage ceramic metal halide was used to give streets and structures a soft, gentle glow. Tree canopies were uplighted like carved ceilings to create virtual rooms. In a later phase, to enhance the public space for shoppers and residents, the central plaza was redesigned, incorporating a unique mandolin shade structure, a performance stage, and additional landscape amenities. The structure lighting design uses color-changing LED luminaires to both uplight fabric shade sails and provides accent light onto the activity lawn and stage below.
