Lighting Designer I

Elizabeth McGuoirk joined The Lighting Practice in 2022. She began her career as an electrical engineer, following graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where she received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. Elizabeth’s love of numbers and interest in light’s ability to influence and inspire merged into a career in lighting. Prior to joining TLP and after working as an electrical engineer for firms based in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, she worked as a lighting designer for another NYC firm. Since joining TLP, Elizabeth’s project experience has expanded to include academic, corporate, healthcare, and retail.

What piqued your interest in lighting design as a career?
It has both a technical and creative aspect that satisfies both the engineer and artist in me.

What is your favorite computer program? Why?
AGI, the electrical engineer in me will always love calculations and numbers.

What motivates and inspires you?
The desire to constantly improve and be a better version of myself than I was the day before. Also, my cat because she sees the rawest version of me and I want her to be proud.

If you could go back in time, what wisdom would you pass on to your younger self?
You’re never going to make everyone happy, focus on what makes you happy.
