Lighting Designer II

John Howell joined The Lighting Practice in 2016 after graduating from The Pennsylvania State University. His pursuit of a career in lighting design came from his interest in the technology, love of math, and desire to express himself creatively. John gained hands on experience during an internship with a Boston, MA area lighting design firm. Since joining TLP, his project experience has expanded to include hospitality environments, corporate fit-outs, retail spaces, and exterior facades.

Why did you become a lighting designer?
I like the combination of technical skills, and creativity.

What advice would you pass on to future lighting designers?
Time management and organization is huge. You’ll be working on a lot at once, you need to manage your time and stay organized.

If you could wave a magic wand, what ill in the world would you solve and why?
Hunger, there is no reason people should go hungry in today’s world.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?
My dad was in the military so I moved around a lot as a kid and have been to so many cool places.
