Faith & Liberty Discovery Center

Philadelphia, PA

Subtly situated on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, the American Bible Society’s Faith and Liberty Discovery Center (FLDC) is a new 40,000 square foot museum and interactive exhibit that educates visitors on religion’s overall impact on American history. A soft balance of daylight and electric light evokes a calming, meditative feel as one becomes acquainted with the interior. Indirect cove lighting is used to emphasize the grandeur of the space, while low-glare discreet downlights allow the natural materials to be prominently featured. The intentional contrast between the bright lobby and dark finished gallery entry, creates intrigue and encourages visitors to explore the exhibit area. Bright vertical planes throughout the underground portion prevent any space from feeling dark or constricting; instead making them feel tall, comfortable, and airy. Large green walls in the meeting spaces utilize biophilic design, connecting people to nature in spaces with no windows.
