University of Pennsylvania Class of 1920 Dining Commons

The 1920 Commons, built in 1970, is a modern architectural landmark at the University of Pennsylvania. This renovation inserted an upscale café into the basement and ground floor of the building and created an outdoor dining terrace. The design team took special care to maintain and enhance the distinctive textures of the waffle slabs, concrete columns and other signature elements of this architectural style. The Lighting Practice’s lighting system produces a glossy, boutique presentation using low cost, low energy solutions that meet the University’s stringent sustainability goals.
