The Lighting Practice is excited to share that the Chicago Streeterville Target won a GOLD award at this year’s Association for Retail Environments Design Awards  (A.R.E. Design Award).

The A.R.E. Design Awards are the industry’s largest and most prestigious retail store design awards program.  We would like to congratulate our team members, Helen Diemer, Jered Widmer, and Rochelle Spahn, who were on the design team and collaborated with Target in the development of the Streeterville store.

Situated along a Chicago River inlet within the heart of the city, the new Target Streeterville project is a great example of adaptive re-use.  The project converted an old loft-style factory space into a new retail destination, maintaining the charm of wood rafters, exposed brick, and concrete floors.  This new urban chic shopping experience used non-evasive methods to add a modern vibe to the raw space.  Large graphics applied to the brick replace traditional signage and linear LED wallwashers provide accent lighting.  The main space uses simple industrial LED pendant luminaires to provide general ambient illumination, while small LED track heads add pops of lighting directing focus to feature displays.  Edge-lit acrylic fins float above the checkout lanes highlighting the destination in a glow of light.

The Lighting Practice has an ongoing collaborative relationship with Target as they continue to improve and update their traditional large format store design and develop new urban/flexible store formats like Chicago Streeterville.  Our team supports Target’s internal design team by developing lighting solutions that reinforce brand, enhance the guest experience and promote sales.  We are honored to continue our positive collaboration with this design-forward retailer.
