ULI Philadelphia has recently announced the six winners for its 2021 Awards for Excellence which recognizes superior development projects and programs throughout the region. The Lighting Practice is pleased to learn Drexel Powel Elementary/ Science Leadership Academy Middle School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, won for its excellence in public private partnerships, education development and community engagement.
Developed by Wexford Science + Technology and Drexel University in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia, the new K-8 school provides two premier public schools with a new innovative space under one roof. The Lighting Practice was part of the design team led by Rogers Partners. TLP designed the interior lighting for classrooms, laboratories, and public spaces as well as exterior site lighting. TLP’s lighting design balances natural daylight and electric light to enhance the welcoming environment. By standardizing fixture specification and design approach, the lighting system reinforces the connection and partnership between the two schools. Special care was given when illuminating the building’s exterior to ensure appropriate light levels for safety while avoiding a negative impact on the surrounding residential community.
