Principal

Michael Barber joined The Lighting Practice in 1995 and became a Principal of the firm in 2004. He has designed lighting for healthcare, education, corporate and retail environments. In addition, he has conducted lighting energy audits for approximately 20 million square feet of academic, hospitality, and manufacturing facilities. Michael acts as the firm’s sustainable design coordinator, working with the staff to maximize their design vision while minimizing the impact to the environment.

What is your favorite aspect of light?
The creation of texture, shadow and the interaction with materials.

If you could only specify one light source on every project for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Halogen, it is light in its simplest form.

What advice would you pass on to future lighting designers?
Question everything.

If you could go back in time, what wisdom would you pass on to your younger self?
Invest in Macintosh/Apple.
