Big Rock Italian Chophouse, located in Birmingham, Michigan, is a 280-seat destination for fine dining and refined leisure. The Italian-inspired steakhouse, featuring an exclusive cigar lounge, pairs rich red hues with warm, low-level lighting to create a moody and inviting atmosphere.

The lighting design enhances the atmosphere through a palette of rich, warm tones and intimate, low-level illumination that invites guests to linger and enjoy the experience. Every fixture was custom designed, drawing from the building’s historic railroad heritage. The private dining room, inspired by a classic train boxcar, features cove lighting that uplights a gold ceiling. Fixtures and décor were thoughtfully selected to evoke the feeling of being aboard a train, subtly referencing the building’s history.

The cigar lounge offers a separate space that maintains the restaurant’s intimate tone. Carefully coordinated ventilation and lighting systems ensure separation between dining and cigar spaces while maintaining a cohesive design language. Outdoor areas carry the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere outside, where a draped ceiling and festoon lighting create a soft, ambient glow and an elegant exterior experience.

Through thoughtful integration of custom detailing and atmospheric lighting, The Lighting Practice transformed Big Rock Italian Chophouse into a space that celebrates connection, and timeless design.
