The lighting design for the Brooklyn Public Library – Ryder Branch renovation was driven by a vision to create a modern, sustainable public library that supports the evolving needs of the community. Working closely with the architectural and design team, The Lighting Practice developed a flexible, energy-efficient lighting solution that enhances the library’s contemporary architecture while creating a welcoming environment for learning, collaboration, and gathering.
Designed for longevity, visual comfort, and ease of maintenance, the lighting strategy integrates layered illumination throughout the renovated civic space. Carefully selected LED luminaires provide high-performance lighting while supporting the library’s long-term operational and sustainability goals. The lighting design emphasizes clean architectural lines, improves wayfinding, and creates a cohesive visual experience across reading areas, community spaces, and children’s environments.
A defining feature of the project is the installation of large custom circular luminaires that establish a striking visual identity within the library interior. These oversized diffused fixtures deliver soft ambient illumination while serving as a central architectural element that anchors the ceiling plane. Extensive mockups and close coordination with manufacturers ensured the luminaires achieved the desired balance of light output, materiality, scale, and constructability.
Throughout the library, lighting acts as a unifying design element that enhances both function and user experience. In the children’s areas, decorative lighting introduces a playful layer that complements vibrant finishes and encourages engagement. The result is a cohesive and inviting public library renovation where architectural lighting supports community connection, flexibility, and everyday use.
