Maryland House

Hartford County, MD

Maryland House, along with its sister plaza Chesapeake House, serves more than 5 million visitors each year on Interstate 95. The original buildings were deteriorating, which led the Maryland Transportation Authority to seek much-needed updates to both plazas. The Lighting Practice designed the interior and exterior lighting for Maryland House. The design goal was to accentuate the architecture of the building and create a calm, welcoming environment for travelers. As the building features large windows and multiple skylights, the updated lighting system maximizes available daylight and supplements where necessary with subtle fluorescent and LED light fixtures. Decorative shaded fixtures were incorporated into the dining area to enhance the feeling of home and familiarity.
