Constructed between 1939 and 1941, the Dupont Nemours Building is a landmark Art Deco structure listed on the historic registry. Originally designed as a multi-use building with apartments, offices, and a theatre, the building remains an important piece of Wilmington’s architectural heritage.
The ground floor renovation reimagined the building’s three distinct lobbies, residential, commercial, and private, balancing the preservation of historic character with the introduction of modern design elements. Working within the requirements of the historic registry, original finishes and architectural features were carefully preserved where possible. The design approach sought to highlight the building’s Art Deco style, uncover and celebrate historic layers, and reinterpret them with a contemporary perspective.
In the commercial lobby, architectural cove lighting creates a sleek, modern framework that emphasizes clean lines while complementing the darker finishes inspired by Art Deco interiors. The residential lobby introduces a sense of grandeur with a statement light fixture at the entry, providing visual interest and an inviting arrival experience. Square downlights provide general illumination, while integrated architectural lighting highlights textures, finishes, and original details. Along the commercial corridor, cove lighting lines the ceiling edges, making the ceiling appear to float, visually expanding the tight space and creating a brighter, more open atmosphere.
Additional upgrades included a redesigned mail room and reconfiguration of circulation paths, ensuring the three lobbies remain cohesive in character while maintaining their distinct identities. The result is a refreshed ground floor that respects the building’s historic fabric while providing a sophisticated, modernized experience for today’s residents, tenants, and visitors.
