The challenge presented to the design team by the Wilmington law firm: create a modern, contemporary aesthetic within the 1916 classically styled courthouse. The solution involved a carefully conceived transformation of materials and lighting elements from traditional to transitional and ultimately a modern vocabulary. Granite and iron give way to wood and glass, and ornamental fixtures are removed of decoration. The metalwork on the LED decorative ring at the main reception desk and surrounding wall sconces includes detailing found in the ornate railings; while inside the conference center lounge, fluorescent and metal halide fixtures integrated into the architecture, preserve the clean, modern corporate interior. The simple design of the offices creates a luminous yet energy efficient work environment.
