Kevin Smolkis

Lighting Designer I

Kevin joined The Lighting Practice in 2022, and he coordinates with allied team members, assisting with documentation of design and performing construction administration tasks. Kevin is inspired by the subconscious ways light plays a part in our lives and decided to pursue lighting design as a career after taking a 3D sculpture class in high school. He graduated from Jefferson University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design, with concentrations in Lighting and Visualization. He has previous experience with fixture design, and lighting for health and hospitality. Outside of lighting design, Kevin’s biggest interests are drawing, hiking, and both digital and film photography.

What’s your favorite aspect of light?
My favorite aspect of light is how it can dramatically change human experience while remaining on such a subconscious level. When designed intentionally, light can change mood, perception, and even productivity in nearly any environment.

What is your favorite computer program? Why?
Definitely Photoshop. I have used it since my freshman year of high school, and it has so many capabilities for creating visually compelling art. Timewise, I have probably months spent just drawing within it.

If you could go back in time, what wisdom would you pass on to your younger self?
Never discourage yourself, practice makes perfect.

What song best describes you?
Hey Jude by The Beatles
