The David L. Lawrence Convention Center Water Feature Wins International IES Illumination Award

On October 27, 2013 during The 40th Annual IES Illumination Awards TLP’s Al Borden and Stephen Hoppe were presented with the Award of Excellence: Energy and Environmental Lighting Design for their project, The David L. Lawrence Convention Center Water Feature located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

The IES Illumination Awards is an international awards program that recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design based on the individual merit of each entry.  The judges are selected for a broad professional spectrum representing knowledge of lighting and design excellence.  The Award of Excellence is given to a design team for an exceptional contribution to the art and science of lighting design.

The David L. Lawrence Convention Center’s Water Feature is located on the banks of the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, PA.  The water feature provides a 2-block long pedestrian connection between downtown Pittsburgh and the Three Rivers Trail System. The feature’s existing lighting was submersed in pools of water and had become an energy and maintenance headache. The center’s operator, Sports and Exhibition Authority, pursued a redesign of the lighting system to take advantage of more cost-effective technologies. TLP began with a series of on-site mock ups to determine how the new lighting would interact with moving water. A color-changing LED system mounted to the ceiling above the water, was selected for its long-life, easy access, low maintenance, and a 94% reduction in energy consumption. The new system is vibrant and welcomes visitors to one of the center’s most unique elements.
