TLP Collaborates with Target to Bring Another Innovative Store to Philly

Target new store design

Target is a retail staple in towns across the country. However, cities like Philadelphia often lack the space to build a store with the company’s traditional layout. Recognizing the unique spatial needs of urban areas, Target has come up with an innovative solution: reimagine their spaces in flexible formats that can fit inside any urban setting. This month, Philly’s fourth mini-Target location has officially opened for business in the Art Museum area of the city.

The Lighting Practice is working closely with Target as they re-envision their traditional store design and customize new small format stores for urban settings. Our designers frequently collaborate with the company’s internal team on innovative lighting solutions that reinforce its brand, enhance the guest experience, and promote sales.

Philadelphia is abuzz with excitement over its newest mini-Target location and the promise of more stores in the future. Featured below, Philly.com interviewed several city residents who are already planning to make a visit.

In addition to the new Philadelphia stores, an excellent example of the company’s reimagined store format is the Target Streeterville location in Chicago. Set in a former loft-style factory, the building kept its industrial feel as it transformed into a new Target location. The design team highlighted the exposed wood rafters, brick, and concrete floors. Large graphics applied to the brick add a modern vibe without damaging the materials. Simple industrial LED pendant luminaires on the sales floor provide general ambient illumination, while small LED track heads add pops of light to direct focus to feature displays.

The team at TLP is proud to be collaborating with Target as it provides cities like Philadelphia and Chicago with innovative retail solutions. We invite shoppers to take note of the new stores’ lighting solutions and share their thoughts with us on the TLP Facebook page.

Philly’s 4th mini-Target opens at 7 a.m. Wednesday in Art Museum area

As the clock ticks down to Target’s newest smaller-format store opening in Philadelphia — this time in the Art Museum area at 7 a.m. Wednesday — Lina Je said she’s ready.

“With a Whole Foods on the corner, and now a Target, my wallet is bracing for impact,” she joked as she peeked inside the glass doors on a chilly Monday night. “I’m thinking of doing Happy Hour at Whole Foods with its bar and wine section, and then heading over here for some shopping.”

Je belongs to the Philadelphia Sports Club, a gym beside the new Target at 2001 Pennsylvania Ave. Nearby are the Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum, and a slew of restaurants.

Such demographics and amenities are what attracted Target, said Samir Shah, its senior vice president of stores. The Art Museum store will have a formal opening at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22. But shoppers can shop starting Wednesday.

“Philadelphia is a city Target has prioritized for growth because we see potential to serve so many different neighborhoods,” Shah added.
