Combining nursing and health professionals, the new 12-story Drexel Health Sciences Building encompasses collaboration, office, lab, and simulation spaces. Designed with sustainability in mind, the building systems reduced energy usage by 40% and gained LEED Gold standards. Daylight harvesting was implemented throughout the building, using natural light as the main source of lighting, reducing the amount of artificial lighting needed. The building has north exposure which brings in abundant natural light while the south side of the building does not and requires more lighting solutions. Architectural lighting was implemented throughout the space to seamlessly pull the space together. State-of-the-art labs and simulation spaces for clinical health, autopsies, physical, music, and dance therapy labs require lighting solutions that are functional and task-orientated. While social spaces allow for more playful lighting design to draw interest into the different areas of the building and promote wayfinding. What resulted is a space that brings together people from all health fields to learn in a harmonious environment.
