The transformation of Temple University’s former Paley Library into the new Barnett College of Public Health reimagines a campus landmark as a dynamic, health-focused academic environment. Designed with the goal of becoming the “healthiest building on campus”, the project integrates human-centered lighting design, daylighting strategies, and sustainable design principles to support the wellbeing of students, faculty, and the university community. The project achieved LEED Gold and WELL Silver certifications, reinforcing the connection between the built environment and occupant health.

The Lighting Practice provided architectural lighting design services focused on creating a bright, intuitive, and engaging environment that supports learning, collaboration, and movement. A newly carved three-story atrium transforms the original library structure into an open gathering space filled with daylight. A custom feature pendant anchors the space, while integrated lighting highlights the living green wall and reinforces the building’s connection to nature and wellness. Wayfinding was a key component of the lighting strategy, particularly within the building’s curved “spine” corridor. Circular ceiling fixtures help guide occupants through the space, while linear lighting elements identify office and collaboration areas.

The building also features a simulation research and training lab designed to replicate real-world environments, including a park, apartment, and retail settings where students can practice public health and physical therapy scenarios. Lighting elements such as bollards, step lights, and large circular luminous fixtures create realistic outdoor conditions and evoke the appearance of a natural sky.

By combining daylight integration, sustainable lighting solutions, and wellness-focused design, the Barnett College of Public Health demonstrates how lighting can transform educational spaces into healthier, more connected environments.
