The Rowan University Chamberlain Student Center 35,000 GSF addition expands the existing student center with a range of student-focused amenities, including group study rooms, informal work areas, student government offices, a coffee house, and flexible meeting spaces. The space was conceived as a modern interpretation of the classical Greek agora, an open, inviting place for social and intellectual exchange. Responding to the site’s natural slope, the building steps upward to carve out a dynamic interior that opens toward the Campus Greenway. A new grand portal along Mullica Hill Road welcomes students and visitors into this “Agora in the Pines,” establishing a strong sense of arrival and connection to campus.
At the heart of the design is a clean, expressive mass timber ceiling that serves as both a structural and architectural focal point. The lighting strategy was carefully developed to celebrate this feature while maintaining its visual purity. Uplighting along the perimeter gently washes the timber surface, balancing the natural daylight that filters through central clerestories above the main gathering space. To preserve the clarity of the ceiling plane, lighting is intentionally kept out of the central zone and instead aligned with circulation paths below, creating a harmonious alignment between the floor and ceiling.
Given the structural sensitivity of the timber system, lighting interventions were thoughtfully integrated to minimize ceiling penetrations. This restraint reinforces the project’s broader goal: to create a calm, uncluttered environment where students can gather, study, and recharge without distraction. The result is a warm, light-filled space that highlights natural materials and daylight, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.
