The Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Medical Archives, located within the Scott Memorial Library, preserves historic treasures collected over the past 200 years, including university records, rare books, and medicinal artifacts. To protect and showcase these items, the space features a state-of-the-art storage vault with environmental controls, a commercial-grade digitization station, an expanded exhibition gallery with display cases, and a lecture hall. Designed as a versatile space for students to explore, study, and engage with history, the Archives invites visitors to connect with the university’s rich past.
The lighting design incorporates strategies that support the architect’s vision for a hospitable space and highlights the medical archives. LED grazers accent acoustic walls to create visual texture and promote wayfinding. Vertically oriented LED accents, paired with small millwork downlights, highlight glass displays containing medical archives, guiding students, staff, and visitors into the space. In The Chamber, LED track lighting and downlights were carefully coordinated with wood ceilings, supporting the gallery space and allowing users to accent busts, artwork, and archives as they are put on display. The Forum, used as an educational space for students, utilizes dimmable LED cove lighting to soften the space and create the feel of extended daylight.
The result is a lighting solution that not only highlights the archival collection but also enriches the overall experience, inviting students to engage with the space. Thoughtful detailing and flexibility ensure the lighting adapts to the evolving needs of the university and its historic collection.
