Butcher & Rose Steakhouse has been featured in the June 2026 issue of Designing Lighting in the article “A Glittering Steakhouse”!
The project brings together architecture, interiors, and lighting to create a distinctive dining experience that transitions seamlessly from day to night. The lighting design supports the restaurant’s sophisticated atmosphere while helping define the character and hierarchy of its various spaces. The design uses layers of light to create warmth, depth, and visual interest throughout the restaurant. Carefully integrated architectural and decorative lighting helps draw attention to key design elements while creating an intimate atmosphere appropriate for a contemporary steakhouse. The lighting works in concert with the restaurant’s material palette and interior architecture, supporting both the overall aesthetic and the experience of guests throughout their visit.
TLP designers Eve Quellman, Michael Barber and Kevin Smolkis contributed their expertise to the feature, sharing insight into the lighting approach and the role light plays in shaping the guest experience at Butcher & Rose.
“The space was a dark shell when we started on the project,” says Michael Barber, president of The Lighting Practice and principal in charge. “The lighting concept layers sculptural statement pieces, such as oversized chandeliers. Much of the fixturing was custom produced. Overall, for the main dining room, we planned for a 3-5 footcandle range,” Barber notes. Custom floral installations with subtle, integrated architectural lighting complement the rich interior palette.”
